Making charges cover the labour of turning raw gold into a finished piece — they scale with design complexity, not just weight, which is why an intricate piece costs more to make than a plain band of the same weight. Jewellers quote them either as a percentage of the gold value or as a flat rate per gram, and the number is genuinely negotiable — it's worth comparing across stores for the same design.
GST on gold jewellery is a flat 3% nationally, charged on the gold value plus making charges combined. Unlike making charges, this isn't negotiable and doesn't vary by state.
Hallmarking is the independent check on purity: a BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) hallmark, together with a HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) number since 2021, confirms the karat a piece is sold as actually matches what it contains. Always ask to see the hallmark before paying — it's the one way to verify the purity claim independent of the jeweller quoting it.
