📅 Date and timings
- Date
- Sat, 8 May 2027 – Sun, 9 May 2027
- Shukla Tritiya tithi (IST)
- 8 May, 11:43 am – 9 May, 9:03 am
Akshaya Tritiya is the Shukla (bright-fortnight) Tritiya of the month of Vaishakha. In 2027 that tithi straddles two days: it begins around 11:43 am on 8 May and lasts until about 9:03 am on 9 May (IST). Some panchangs observe the festival on 8 May because Tritiya is present for the afternoon, others on 9 May because it is present at sunrise. Both are defensible, so follow your family's panchang.
Tithi times are calculated from the Sun and Moon and are accurate to a few minutes. Check a panchang for your city for an exact muhurat.
🕒 When to buy
- Traditionally the whole of Tritiya is regarded as auspicious, and many families do not look for a separate muhurat. That makes the window above, from the afternoon of 8 May to the morning of 9 May, the time to treat as Akshaya Tritiya.
- Rahu Kaal does not overlap the Tritiya window this year. On Saturday 8 May it falls in the morning (about 9:00 to 10:30 am, depending on your city), before Tritiya begins, and on Sunday 9 May it falls in the late afternoon, after Tritiya has ended. The table has the exact times for your city.
- If you want to buy on the morning of the 9th, do it before the tithi ends at about 9:03 am.
- Confirm with a local panchang if the exact moment matters to you, since city-level sunrise and regional calendars can shift the observed day.

🛍️ What people buy
- Gold is the traditional purchase: coins, small bars and jewellery. The word akshaya means 'imperishable', which is why people buy things they hope will last.
- Many families also start something new on the day, such as a business, a puja or a savings plan.
- Whatever you buy, check the hallmark and the making charge and keep the bill.
✅ Before you buy, on any date
- Look for the BIS hallmark and HUID on gold jewellery, and ask for a bill that lists purity (karat) and weight.
- Compare making charges between jewellers. They vary far more than the gold rate does.
- Check the day's gold rate before you pay. On festival days many jewellers run offers, so compare the final bill, not the discount.
Frequently asked questions
When is Akshaya Tritiya in 2027?
Akshaya Tritiya 2027 falls on 8 and 9 May. Tritiya starts at about 11:43 am on Saturday 8 May and ends at about 9:03 am on Sunday 9 May (IST), so panchangs differ on which day to observe. Many treat the whole window as auspicious.
Why do some calendars say 8 May and others 9 May?
The tithi straddles two days. A calendar that counts the day on which Tritiya is present in the afternoon gives 8 May, and one that counts the day it is present at sunrise gives 9 May. Neither is wrong, and regional rules differ.
What is the best time to buy gold on Akshaya Tritiya 2027?
Tradition regards the entire Tritiya tithi as auspicious, so many families do not look for a separate muhurat. If you want to be careful, buy outside Rahu Kaal, and check a local panchang for your city.
Is buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya compulsory?
No. It is a custom. Buying gold on this day is popular, but it is not a requirement, and it does not predict prices or guarantee any outcome.
Is Akshaya Tritiya a good time to buy gold for investment?
Demand is high around the festival, and some jewellers add premiums while others run offers. The market rate is the same as on any other day, so compare the final bill and check purity, and treat the date as a cultural choice, not an investment signal.
Should I buy jewellery or coins?
Coins and small bars have no making charge. Jewellery carries making charges, often 8 to 25 percent. Look for the BIS hallmark and HUID in either case, and ask for a bill that lists purity and weight.
