📅 Date and timings

- Krishna Trayodashi tithi (IST)
- 6 Nov, 10:31 am – 7 Nov, 10:48 am
Dhanteras is observed on the day the Trayodashi tithi of the dark fortnight (Krishna paksha) is present at Pradosh Kaal, the evening period after sunset. On 6 November the tithi covers the evening in every city listed below, which is why that is the date.
Tithi times are calculated from the Sun and Moon and are accurate to a few minutes. Check a panchang for your city for an exact muhurat.
🕒 When to buy
- Many families buy at any time while Trayodashi lasts, and many prefer the evening, during Pradosh Kaal, when the Lakshmi puja is also done.
- Avoid starting a purchase during Rahu Kaal. On a Friday it falls in the late morning, and the exact window for your city is in the table.
- Chaturmas is still running on 6 November (it ends on Prabodhini Ekadashi, 19 November). Many families treat Dhanteras as an exception and buy anyway. Follow your own family's custom.

🛍️ What people buy
- Gold and silver coins or small bars are the most common purchase, and many people choose them because they carry no making charge.
- New utensils, especially of brass or silver, are the older tradition for the day.
- Jewellery is popular too. If you buy it, compare making charges and ask for the hallmark details.
✅ Before you buy, on any date
- Look for the BIS hallmark and HUID on gold jewellery, and ask for a bill that lists purity (karat) and weight.
- Compare making charges between jewellers. They vary far more than the gold rate does.
- Check the day's gold rate before you pay. On festival days many jewellers run offers, so compare the final bill, not the discount.
Frequently asked questions
When is Dhanteras in 2026?
Dhanteras 2026 is on Friday, 6 November. Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) follows on Sunday, 8 November.
What is the best time to buy gold on Dhanteras 2026?
Tradition treats the whole Trayodashi tithi as auspicious, and many families prefer the evening Pradosh Kaal. The table on this page gives the tithi window and Pradosh Kaal for 15 cities. Avoid starting a purchase during Rahu Kaal, and check a local panchang for an exact muhurat.
Is it necessary to buy gold on Dhanteras?
No. Buying gold, silver or utensils is a custom, not a requirement. Many families buy something small, and none of it predicts the gold price or guarantees any outcome.
Can I buy gold on Dhanteras during Chaturmas?
Chaturmas runs until 19 November 2026, and some traditions practise restraint during it. Dhanteras is widely treated as an exception, but customs differ by region and community, so follow your family's practice.
Which is better to buy on Dhanteras, a coin or jewellery?
Coins and small bars have no making charge, so you pay mostly for the gold. Jewellery carries making charges, often 8 to 25 percent. Either way, look for the BIS hallmark and HUID and keep the bill.
Will gold prices be higher on Dhanteras?
Demand is usually strong around Dhanteras, and some jewellers add premiums while others run offers. The rate is the same market rate as any other day, so check the day's rate before you pay and compare the final bill.
