gold buying guide

Diwali is the one stretch of the year when most Indian households think about gold at the same time, and when the gap between the rate you see online and the bill you pay is easiest to ignore. This guide is the one-page route through it: the dates, what the rate is right now, what your budget buys, and the decisions that actually change what you pay.

Note

Every rupee figure in this article is calculated from Goldmitra's current gold rate when the page loads, so the numbers below are not frozen at the time of writing. They are market-based estimates, not a jeweller's quote.

Gold rate today

As of 18 Oct 2026, 6:17 am IST, the Goldmitra rate is ₹14,630 per gram for 24K and ₹13,415 per gram for 22K (₹1,34,149 per 10 grams of 22K). This is the gold rate before making charges and GST, so it is not what a piece of jewellery costs. For your city, see today's gold rate. Prices differ a little from city to city and from jeweller to jeweller, which is explained in why gold prices vary by city.

Exact Trayodashi, Pradosh Kaal and Rahu Kaal timings for 15 cities are on our Dhanteras 2026 muhurat page, and the Dhanteras gold buying guide covers how to use them.

Step 1: Decide what the gold is for

The right purchase depends on the job the gold has to do. There are really only three.

  • To wear: jewellery. You are paying for design and labour on top of the metal, and you accept that you will not get the making charge back when you sell.
  • To hold as savings or gift as a token: coins and bars, which carry a much smaller premium. Our coin vs jewellery comparison goes through the real trade-offs.
  • To invest without storing it: digital gold, gold ETFs or sovereign gold bonds. See the gold investment guide and best way to invest in gold in India.

Step 2: Know what your budget actually buys

At today's rate, a budget turns into much less gold than most people expect, because the jeweller's bill adds making charges and then 3% GST on top of the total. Here is the same ₹50,000 under two realistic assumptions:

  • 22K jewellery with 12% making charge, GST included: about 3.23 g of gold.
  • 24K coin with a 2% premium, GST included: about 3.25 g of gold. (2% is an illustrative premium. Real coin premiums vary by seller.)

The coin gives you more gold per rupee, and the jewellery gives you something to wear. Neither is wrong. What matters is knowing the trade you are making. To test your own budget, use the jewellery price calculator.

Step 3: Pick the purity that suits the purpose

22K (91.6% gold) is the usual choice for jewellery because it is strong enough to wear. 24K (99.9%) is the choice for coins and bars. 18K (75%) suits stone-studded pieces and is cheaper per gram. The full comparison, with live prices for each, is in 22K vs 24K vs 18K gold.

Step 4: Read the making charge before the rate

Making charges are where jewellery prices diverge most. Published guides put plain machine-made chains and bangles at roughly 3% to 10% and designer or temple jewellery at 15% to 25% of the gold value. On a 10 gram 22K piece, the difference between a 8% and a 20% making charge is the difference between about ₹1,49,227 and ₹1,65,808 for the same weight. Gold making charges explained shows how to compare quotes.

Step 5: Choose your timing, without expecting a discount

Dhanteras and Diwali are cultural dates, not discount dates. The market rate is the same as on any other day, and demand is usually strong, so some jewellers add premiums while others run offers. Many buyers split the purchase: a small piece on Dhanteras for the tradition, and the larger purchase when they have compared quotes. We cover price drivers in Gold before Diwali 2026. None of this is a prediction. Nobody can tell you whether the rate will be higher or lower next week.

Step 6: Check the paperwork before you pay

  • Hallmark: a BIS hallmark with the purity (for example 22K916) and a 6-character HUID code on each piece.
  • Itemised bill: gold weight, rate per gram, making charge, stone charges, GST and the total, all separate.
  • Buyback or exchange terms: ask in writing what deduction applies when you sell back or exchange.

The full list is in our gold buying checklist. If you are buying for a wedding, use the wedding jewellery budget planner.

Common Diwali gold-buying mistakes

  • Comparing the per-gram rate across jewellers and ignoring the making charge, which usually differs more.
  • Paying a festival premium for a piece that a plain weekday visit would have priced the same.
  • Buying a heavy, intricate design as an investment. Intricate work has the highest making charge and the lowest resale value per gram.
  • Skipping the bill. Without it, you cannot claim a warranty, exchange or insurance.

Where to buy: jeweller, brand store, bank or online

Each channel trades something. A neighbourhood jeweller is the easiest to negotiate with and often takes old gold in exchange, but the quality of the paperwork varies. A national chain usually has standard pricing, itemised billing and a published exchange policy, at the cost of less room to bargain. Banks sell certified 24K coins but cannot buy them back under RBI rules. Online platforms are convenient for small amounts, but for digital gold read the digital gold guide and the tax rules first. Whichever you choose, the checks in step 6 apply.

Using old gold: how an exchange really works

Exchange offers can lower the cash you spend, but they work on the metal's value after a purity test and deductions, not on what you originally paid. Ten grams of old 22K jewellery is worth ₹1,34,149 at today's rate before any deduction. Ask for the purity reading, the deduction and the rate used, in writing, and check the figure against the resale value calculator.

Three budgets, three sensible plans

  • About ₹25,000: roughly 1.64 g of 22K at a 10% making charge, or 1.63 g of 24K as a coin. A coin or one small, light piece fits best.
  • About ₹1 lakh: roughly 6.58 g of 22K at 10% making, or 6.51 g of 24K as coins. Enough for a chain or a pair of bangles, or for splitting between a piece to wear and a coin to hold.
  • About ₹2 lakh: roughly 12.9 g of 22K at 12% making. At this size, get quotes from at least three jewellers and consider splitting the purchase between Dhanteras and the wedding season rather than buying everything on one day.

These figures are estimates that use assumed making charges and an assumed coin premium. Your quote is what counts.

What moves the rate

The rate follows the international gold price converted into rupees. India's import duty, which was raised to 15% in May 2026, is built into the domestic price, and a weaker rupee raises the rupee price even when the dollar price is flat. The drivers are laid out in Gold before Diwali 2026. Knowing them helps you understand a move, but it does not let you predict next week's rate, and neither can anyone else.

Frequently asked questions

When is Dhanteras in 2026?

Dhanteras 2026 is on Friday, 6 November. Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is on Sunday, 8 November. Dates follow the North Indian calendar and regional dates can differ by a day.

Is it cheaper to buy gold on Dhanteras?

Not by default. The market rate is the same as on any other day. Demand is high, so some jewellers add premiums and others run offers. Compare the final bill, not the date.

How much gold can I buy with ₹50,000?

It depends on the day's rate, the purity and the making charge. The live estimate near the top of this article shows the grams for jewellery and for a coin at today's rate, and the jewellery calculator lets you test your own figures.

Should I buy a gold coin or jewellery for Diwali?

A coin carries a much smaller premium and is easier to sell, while jewellery is for wearing and has making charges that you do not get back on resale. Pick by purpose.

Which purity should I buy, 22K or 24K?

22K is the usual choice for jewellery because it is strong enough to wear. 24K is the usual choice for coins and bars. 18K suits studded pieces.

What should I check before paying for gold jewellery?

Check the BIS hallmark and HUID, ask for an itemised bill showing weight, rate, making charge and GST, and confirm the buyback or exchange terms in writing.
